Program:
Seismic Design Updates for CBC 2019 and Application of Site-Specific (Non-Ergodic) Seismic Hazard Analysis for Ground Motion Optimization

What you will learn:

  • Changes to the seismic provisions in CBC 2019
  • Overview of the non-ergodic seismic hazard analysis for optimization ground motion studies
  • Project case studies
The seismic provisions of the CBC 2019 are significantly different from the previous version and require Site-Specific Seismic Hazard Analysis (SHA) for most sites located on Site Class D and E soil conditions. The site-specific SHA under the new code also requires utilization of the Third Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF3), which is more complex than the previous version (UCERF2). Site-specific, non-ergodic SHA is an increasingly important part of ground-motion hazard characterization for critical projects. While the efforts associated with non-ergodic SHA are considerably higher than traditional, ergodic SHA methods, the resulting ground motion estimates are more accurate and less uncertain, and can result in a more refined and more economical structural design.

Speaker:

URI ELIAHU, GE
President/CEO

As president of ENGEO, Uri is committed to the highest levels of technical expertise. Serving clients by bringing advanced and exacting science to benefit their projects is paramount. Under Uri’s leadership, ENGEO has become the consultant of choice for urban high-rise, major waterfront development, master-planned and mixed-use development, large-scale earthwork, transportation, industrial sites and military bases. During his career, he has lent his expertise to a wide range of complex projects and has developed and fostered close relationships with many officials in local, state, and federal jurisdictional agencies. He is a Founding Director of the California Association of Geologic Hazard Abatement Districts (GHADs).

DAVID TEAGUE, PhD, PE
Project Engineer

David joined ENGEO after receiving his PhD from the University of Texas, Austin. He specializes in earthquake engineering and noninvasive subsurface exploration techniques. David performs geotechnical explorations and provides design recommendations for various types of projects. He has performed seismic hazard analyses for a number of high-profile projects. He played an instrumental role in ENGEO's implementation of a specialized technique for predicting earthquake site response known as "non-ergodic site response."
