Considerations for Seismic Risk Reduction in Steel Moment Frames

Join Us on

Program:

The Southern California region is identified as one of the essential regions for the economic viability of the USA. Presence of hidden thrust faults in the Southern California Basin, such as the Puente Hills thrust fault discovered in 1999, is particularly dangerous. The unique nature of Southern California Seismicity (SCS) requires special considerations. The presentation will address considerations for risk assessment, retrofit and repair of existing steel moment frames including those due to SCS.

Speaker:

Ashwani (Ashi) Dhalwala, M.S.,S.E., Principal, AEC Solutions, specializes in Earthquake Engineering and Earthquake Dynamics of structures with more than 50 years of experience in seismic structural engineering. The range of projects include mid to high-rise reinforced concrete, precast and post tensioned, tall and midrise steel structures, low and midrise wood and masonry structures, and tilt-up construction.  For the past 35 years, he has performed seismic risk evaluations, vibration monitoring and strengthening/updating of several existing and new buildings including repair/strengthening of post earthquake damaged buildings. He received his M.S.C.E. in 1969 from the Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics Division of UC Berkeley.

He was appointed to the SEAOSC/L.A. City Task force advisory committees on Non-Ductile Reinforced Concrete Structures, Type V Construction and Non Structural Building Elements.  The Committees were formed by the City of Los Angeles for assessing damage and providing recommendations to the City after the Northridge Earthquake. He currently chairs the SEAOSC Steel Committee and is past chair and current member of the ASCE FED Committee on Practices to Reduce Failures.
