Part 1 - Introduction to Mass Timber, California Adoption
Date: Thursday November 18 – 12:00 to 1:30 pm PT
Speaker: Michelle Kam-Biron, Structurlam

Topic of Discussion:
A Structural Overview of Mass Timber Products and Code Provisions, including a CALBO update

Throughout the country, cities and states are early adopting the 2021 International Building Code mass timber provisions which expands the use of wood construction from 6 to 18 stories and demand for mass timber buildings are on the rise. There are over 1000 projects throughout the nation that are using mass timber under previous code provisions or the 2021 IBC provisions. This presentation provides an overview of mass timber structural elements that include cross-laminated timber (CLT), structural composite lumber (SCL), gluedlaminated timber (glulam), mechanically laminated decking (aka nail-laminated timber, NLT), and large section sawn timbers. Heavy Timber and Mass Timber structural applications as well as fire protection requirements per the 2018 and 2021 IBC are discussed. Tips for working with a mass timber manufacturer are also discussed as early engagement is key to a successful mass timber project.

Part 2 - Fire Resistance Design
Date: Thursday December 2 – 12:00 to 1:30 pm PT
Speaker: Jason Smart, AWC

Topic of Discussion: Principles of Fire Resistance Design, Protection of Connections, and Special Inspections

Principles of Fire Resistance Design, Protection of Connections, and Special Inspections Changes to the 2021 International Building Code allow for construction of mass timber buildings with larger heights and areas than is currently permitted in Types III, IV, and V construction. This presentation will provide an overview of fire design of mass timber building elements and assemblies, and protection of connections. New code provisions for special inspection of tall mass timber structures will also be discussed.

Part 3 - CLT Diaphragm Seismic Design
Date: Thursday December 9 – 12:00 to 1:30 pm PT
Speaker: Scott Breneman, Woodworks; Michelle Kam-Biron, Struturlam

Topic of Discussion: CLT Diaphragm Design: New Code Provisions and Design Examples

The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) as structural floor and roof panels has seen incredible growth in the US over the past decade.  However, its use as part of a seismic and wind force-resisting system—either as a diaphragm or shear wall—has not been codified to date. This has resulted in designing CLT diaphragms through alternative means or using a structural  topping, such as a layer of wood structural panels or concrete, as the diaphragm. This webinar will introduce new provisions for CLT diaphragm design, in the recently published American Wood Council’s 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS), which is referenced from the IBC 2021. Following a discussion of the new SDPWS provisions, CLT diaphragm detailing options and design examples will be presented in order to apply practical design techniques and discuss structural detailing challenges and solutions. Part 4 - CLT Shear Wall Seismic Design

Date: Thursday December 16 - 12:00 to 1:30 pm PT
Speakers: Phil Line (AWC) and Omar Amini (FPL)

Topic of Discussion: Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Shear Wall Design Example

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Shear Wall Design Example Seismic force resisting systems based on Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) shear walls have garnered considerable attention for use in building structures around the world for many years with standardization as a seismic force resisting system happing in the U.S. for the first time with inclusion of seismic design requirements in 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) and in ASCE 7-22 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. This presentation summarizes the CLT shear wall design example contained in the 2020 NEHRP Provisions: Design Examples, provides background on the new system, and illustrates application of the CLT shear wall system design requirements through a design example.
